College Admission Tips – Using Summer to Your Advantage!

Summer Activities Can Have a Positive Effect On College Admission Selection

Summer prep for college admittanceIt is hard to believe, but soon summer vacation almost is upon us.  It is understandable that right after exams have been completed many students will take some well deserved rest. But there are many things that students can do over the summer to make next fall easier and to improve their chance of getting accepted at a college of their choice.  Since students do not have other academic obligations to compete with their time, this is a great time to get started on their college applications.  While the Common Application will not be available until the beginning of August, the essay prompts are already available.

Essays and early college campus visits impact the college admission process

In fact, starting on the college admission essay is one of the most important things that a student can do over the summer.  In the 2014 National Association of College Admission Counselor’s State of College Admissions report, 60% of colleges rated the essay as an important factor in the college admissions decision.  However, this isn’t the only factor that students can influence over the summer.  While many families may not fully understand what it is (but you can check one of our previous articles), 54.1% of colleges rated demonstrated interest as an important factor.  That means that if you haven’t visited schools yet, then you should start making your college visits this summer.

Volunteer this summer to improve your college admission chances

In addition, 50.2% of colleges rate extracurricular activities of importance and 19.7% rate work of importance.  What does that mean?  Sitting around will not help you get accepted at your first choice college, but finding some volunteer activities or getting a summer job might be to your advantage.

SAT scores still matter. Take a SAT test prep course this summer

While many stories you hear in the media might be to the contrary, 87.8% of colleges rate standardized test scores of either moderate or significant importance in the college admission decision.  With test results from the March SAT finally out, the summer is a great time to prepare for the October SAT test.  Since March was the first time that this version of the SAT has been given, many people may have trouble interpreting the scores, especially the sub scores.  The sub scores give much more detail about the specific content areas where the student had difficulties, and can be used to help develop a preparation plan over the summer.  There are a variety of methods that a student can prepare over for the SAT, ranging from classes and private tutoring to self study and Khan Academy.  Whichever method you choose, it is important that a student does prepare for the test, as not only are most college merit scholarships tied to SAT scores, but also a past USA Today article cited a NACAC study that showed an increase of just 30 points could significantly improve a student’s chances of gaining admission to a competitive college.  In today’s globally competitive world it’s important to examine every choice and seize every opportunity.

However your student ultimately decides to spend this summer remember to always be positive, productive, and prepared for the coming school year.
