Tips for Writing a Resume

|
|
-
Be clear and concise, not long-winded and
flowery. This is not a paper for your expository writing
class.
-
Don't lie. If they find out you have stretched
the truth too far, you've probably ruined your chances for
admission.
-
Remember: on the application and resume,
the things you spend most time on and the things most important
to you should be seen first.
-
Try to limit your resume to one page. Move
the margins or make the font smaller if you have to.
-
Stick to a simple, standard font and layout.
Unless you are an art student applying to an art program,
youre resume should be clean and straighforward.
-
Proofread! Spelling errors make you look
careless. Looking careless will have the admissions committee
think you are not serious about wanting to attend their
school.
-
Use powerful verbs, they will give any boring
resume life.
-
Always make sure your contact information
is on the top or somewhere conspicuous.
-
With each activity you want to write the
title of any position you held in the sport or club, and
a brief description (no more than 2-3 lines) about your
participation. Don't just write, "Raised money for
local churches," write, "Spearheaded the games
section of a carnival to raise money for the church's Lenten
Hunger Drive."
-
Don't worry if you dont have a long list
of impressive jobs. The purpose of the student resume is
to highlight your academic and extracurricular strenghts,
so these should come first.

How to Put Together a Student Resume
The purpose of your student resume is to organize
and summarize your accomplishments for the admissions committee.
Often, when you are filling out your applications you will notice
that you may not have room to write in all your activities.
This is partly what your resume is for. Your resume gives you
the opportunity to expand on all the things you participate
in both in and out of school. Sometimes referred to as a "brag
sheet," your resume should include almost anything
you do outside of school. That being said, it should NOT include
things like drivers' ed, SAT prep classes, or going to your
grandmother's house. You want to include any sports, clubs,
volunteer work, abroad experiences, work experience, skills,
or anything you feel would give the admissions committee an
idea of who you are and what you have accomplished or participate
in.
