We are here to help you. Since 1999 we have been helping students with all aspects of the college search. We like to think we relieve stress at a very tense time for most families. We have assembled a list of commonly asked questions about our services and the college process. If you do not see an answer to your question, you can email founder James Maroney at jmaroney@firstchoicecollege.com.
We are eager to schedule an initial consultation with you where we can evaluate where you are in the process and determine how we can best help you. To schedule your initial consultation, email James Maroney or visit our contacts page.
  • What Does First Choice College Placement Do?

First Choice College Placement is a full service educational consulting firm. We assist high school students in all aspects of the college search. We help students identify the schools that are the best fit for them, then through test prep and other strategies we help them to get in to those schools, and finally we show families how to finance the college education. Our services fall in five basic areas: College Selection, College Admission, College Financing, Athletic Placement, and Test Preparation. You can learn more about each specific area by clicking the links.

  • What are the results of past students who have taken your class?

On the old test, we averaged just under a 100 point increase. We are still collecting data on the new test, but it looks like our students are averaging just under a 100 point increase on the Critical Reading and the Math, and overall on the test they are averaging approximately 150 point increase.

  • How are the SAT and ACT different? Do schools take the ACT?

All schools except one in the country accept the ACT. The best way to understand the difference is to read this article:

  • What happens if my child's scores do not improve?

We do not believe that a credible company can guarantee that a student will improve his scores, since so much of that is dependent on the amount of work that a student is willing to put in outside of the classroom. We have built our business on referrals from happy clients, and so we want to do everything we can to make our clients happy. Therefore, if a student takes our SAT class and doesn't improve by more than 50 points we will offer that student two free private tutoring sessions. If a student uses our private tutoring services and doesn't improve by at least 50 points we will offer one free session for every four sessions that the student has attended.

  • Should I enroll my student in private tutoring or the class?

Generally we recommend that if a student is below 900 or above 1200 (out of just the Critical Reading and the Math), she should consider private tutoring over the class. The reason is a student below 900 may need more help and a student above 1200 may like to go faster than the class.

  • How do I know if my child should take the SAT or ACT?

We recommend that all students take a practice ACT, we will then score the test for them and compare it to their SAT scores so we can make an educated decision. Since the SAT has some biases built in to the test, woman and some minority groups tend to score better on the ACT.

  • Which of your services do I need to help my child?

The best way to know which services you require is to schedule an initial meeting. We will discuss where you are in the process and see if we can help you. There is a $75 fee for an initial consultation, however, if you utilize any of our services the money will be applied towards whatever package you choose.

  • When should I file for financial aid?

Typically you file as soon as possible after January 1 of the student's senior year in high school. However, if the student is applying early action or early decision they may need to file the CSS PROFILE in October or November. We would be happy to schedule an appointment with one of our consultants to discuss how we can help save you money and aggravation with college financing. Learn more about the financial aid process by reading the articles in our College Financing section.
